I know grandma is going to insist that I eat more. She says I'm too skinny.
My aunts wants to take me shopping for new clothes.
They say how beautiful I am becoming and Ma should be proud. I
want to play with my cousins. Have races and scrape my knees.
Hide from my uncle before he pinches my face red.
I find my sister and we make up a our secret utopia.
Mom puts my hair up with a big red hair ribbon.
She said red is a proper children's color.
Grandpa takes me out to the balcony. The night's city breeze on my face.
Look at all those stars he said.
So much laughter. Almost as much as there is food.
Those hard bamboo sheets on the beds.
Hand knitted slippers. Red wood chairs and green tea.
Peaceful afternoons with sun peeking through the gold curtains.
I make shadows puppets and draw purple princesses.
I want to stay there forever. This is where my childhood happiness dwells.
